New Fast Track OSD facility
The pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim am Rhein needed a partner who would help them design and build an OSD production facility in a given time frame of just 18 months – from the first sketch until the start of a commercial production. High flexibility and modularity were further demands, as commercial production will run for a limited time only, before the facility is remodeled for other production purposes. Besides time and flexibility, simplification was the third design driver, and lessons learned from it should be collected to be considered in future projects.
Pharmaplan started with a three-week feasibility study, where the given process was translated into a facility concept, and the overall project execution strategy for the ultra fast-track project was developed.
The facility concept consisted of separating – design and construction wise – “a column free building shell” from all “interior finishes, technical systems and process equipment”. The concept, together with the agile interlacing of design, tender and construction activities delivered a weather proof building shell only nine months after start of the feasibility study, allowing all contractors to work simultaneously on three floors and temporarily in up to three shifts. Mechanical completion of most systems was reached 13 months after project start, and commercial production started after altogether 18 months.
